Police in the Dr Kenneth Kaunda District arrested five suspects on Thursday evening, 11 May 2023, after they robbed a jewellery store in Klerksdorp. Three armed suspects pointed a gun at a salesperson in the store and took a variety of jewellery before fleeing the scene in a white getaway vehicle with two occupants. Fortunately, the salesperson managed to escape and informed the authorities.

The police, assisted by the Syntell camera group, were able to trace the suspects’ vehicle on N12 towards Wolmaransstad. The Dr Kenneth Kaunda District Tactical Response Team (TRT) together with Wolmaransstad police intercepted the vehicle leading to the arrest of the suspects. The police were also able to recover the stolen jewellery.

The suspects, whose ages range from 28 to 41, are expected to appear in court on Monday, 15 May 2023, to face charges of business robbery. The Provincial Commissioner of North West, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena, commended all the units involved for their collaboration and efforts in ensuring that the suspects were arrested.

This incident is a clear indication that crime is still rampant in South Africa, and criminals continue to terrorize innocent people. The fact that these criminals were willing to use a gun to commit their crime is especially concerning. It is reassuring that the police were able to apprehend the suspects and recover the stolen goods, but it is important for the justice system to ensure that these criminals face the full might of the law.

This is a reminder to business owners to ensure that they have adequate security measures in place to prevent such incidents from occurring. It is also a call for all South Africans to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the authorities. The fight against crime requires collaboration between the police and the community, and we must all play our part in ensuring that our communities are safe and secure.
