In a shocking turn of events, a 29-year-old Mbombela traffic officer, identified as Khanyisile Viola Nyalunga, was remanded in custody following her appearance in the Hazyview Magistrate’s Court on Monday, July 31. Nyalunga stands accused of involvement in an attempted cash-in-transit (CIT) heist that occurred in Hazyview on Thursday, July 27.

The incident unfolded in the heart of Hazyview, where a Fidelity Security armoured vehicle (AV) was targeted and rammed by a grey Mercedes-Benz. Law enforcement agencies responded swiftly to the scene, leading to a fierce exchange of gunfire between the criminals and security personnel.

However, the investigation took an unexpected twist when evidence surfaced linking Khanyisile Viola Nyalunga, a traffic officer in the Mbombela district, to the criminal gang involved in the heist attempt.

During her court appearance, Nyalunga faced charges of conspiracy to commit robbery, robbery under aggravating circumstances, attempted murder, and possession of illegal firearms and ammunition. The prosecution provided compelling evidence implicating the traffic officer in the foiled CIT heist, leading the court to remand her in custody pending further investigation.

The case has been postponed to Tuesday, 1st August for further bail application. As the case unfolds, the community awaits further developments and hopes for clarity on the alleged involvement of a Mbombela traffic officer in such a brazen criminal act.
