Former health minister, Dr Zweli Mkhize who contested for ANC presidency against Cyril Ramaphosa at Nasrec conference and lost, had now been appointed to a top position.

This appointment of Zweli Mkhize comes as president Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to reshuffle his cabinet. The Kwa-Zulu Natal comrade, Zweli Mkhize was appointed to lead the party’s social transformation subcommittee.

Among other appointments following the special NEC meeting, David Makhura the former Gauteng Premier was appointed as the head of political education and Mdumiseni Ntuli as manager of elections.

Although some have welcomed these appointments, they expressed their concerns over the Zweli Mkhize being given another portfolio to lead. They said he cannot be trusted especially after his alleged involvement in the Digital Vibes scandal during his tenure as health minister.

“Mdumiseni Ntuli is the only person that I know will do the work openly. As for Zweli Mkhize, I don’t trust him in terms of leading any project remember what he did during hard time of COVID-19. David Makhura his problem is that he failed as a premier in Gauteng,” some said.

Those who are happy that Zweli Mkhize after his presidential bid failed to yield results, but has now been appointed to a different position, said perhaps he will prove his opponents wrong.

“Great appointment. Zweli might champion the building of those car washes that he envisioned for young people as the innovative breakthrough to address inequality,” they said.

ANC secretary general, Fikile Mbalula who announced these appointments after the National Executive Committee meeting said there were a lot of misgivings in the ANC and outside. He said in the ANC, people were questioning the decision in relation to conference resolutions.

“We clarified this is in no way a departure from conference resolutions,” said Fikile Mbalula, the ANC secretary general in response to people’s complains.
