The world football governing body asked below the clip in their post that should Maart’s goal be considered for the Puskas award.
The FIFA Puskas was established on 20 October 2009 at the behest of then-president Sepp Blatter, to be awarded to the male or female judged to have scored the most aesthetically significant, or “most beautiful”, goal of the calendar year, per the description on the Wikipedia page.
The likes of former Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Hlompho Kekana and former Baroka goalkeeper Oscarine Masuluke have earned the recognition of being among the nominees but did not win the award.
So there is certain resignation from local fans that should Maart’s goal be considered for the Puskas award, he is unlikely to edge the European counterparts, who always win the trophy.
However, in my opinion, it would be a massive achievement for Maart and Chiefs and also it would give the Soweto derby more exposure to the world, should it be considered for the Puskas award.
However, one stumbling block, as many have pointed out on social media, surely rival fans, that the possible infringement on Ndabayithethwa Ndlondlo before Maart scored could be a blow to the goal potentially being considered.
In my opinion, without the Video Assistant Referee (VAR), the referee’s decision is final and those laws are made by FIFA themselves.
And besides, the VAR, where other leagues have the privilege of using it, does not get involved in every decision a referee makes or doesn’t make like whether an incident should have been a foul or it should have been a corner.
But certainly, imagine Maart’s goal being beamed in a screen watched by a global audience, people would be asking themselves, but was that not a foul in the build-up?
Either way, if FIFA does not include Maart’s goal in their Puskas award shortlist, they need to be straight-forward Chiefs and PSL fans on what grounds did the goal not qualify and if it’s because of an alleged foul, then that would be a wake up call for the League to procure VAR systems to be used in the DStv Premiership to improve the quality of the product.
