Orlando Pirates may have progressed to the Semi-finals to the Caf confederation Cup after their penalty shoot-out win against Simba SC on Sunday.
However, the match was filled with controversy, after Pirates’ goal, a brilliantly taken header by striker Peprah should not have stood had the Video Assistant Refree had been utilised correctly.
Peprah headed home from a beautifully placed cross from left-back Innocent Maela. But irrespective of the beauty of the goal, the picture from the VAR showed Peprah a little bit ahead of the last player on the defensive line.
The football fraternity reacted to the image, with some section saying African match officials have actually failed implement the VAR adequately, as there have been cries from other teams that it is inconsistent.
Quite ironically, Ncikazi criticised how the very VAR was used during the first leg, in which Pirates were denied a penalty.
It does not require rocket science to figure that the VAR has been mismanaged in African competitions.
But to be fair to the officials, unlike in Europe, the technology is new in this continent, and a lot of referees do not use it on weekly basis in domestic games.
Like for instance, you can’t expect the referee who was from Seychelles to be adequately vessed with the technology, when he does not use it oftenly.
It might take some time for them to use it more effectively.
What are your thoughts about the Pirates goal? Do you think it was a legitimate goal or it should have been ruled our for offside?
