Police commissioner Khehla Sitole has provided an update on the investigation of slain Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa.
Meyiwa was gunned down at his girlfriend’s house in Vosloorus nearly four years ago, with his killer(s) still at large and information around his death still sketchy.
The Umlazi-born shot-stopper, who would have been 34 this year, was recently commemorated in his hometown with a ‘legends’ match that featured some of his prominent colleagues.
Police minister Bheki Cele at the time explained the reason for the long-winded process behind making any arrests, and Sitole has since provided an update.
“Yesterday [Wednesday] I was sitting in a conference of the crime detection family, within the South African Police Service – part and parcel of the turnaround vision,” said Sitole.
“One of the key deliverables in the ‘cold case strategy’ that was introduced and formalised, which is intended to re-analyse all cold cases to look at where we went wrong and the skill and capacity that handled cases.
“So, the case of Senzo Meyiwa has been reviewed. We have taken our highest capacity and deployed them to deal with this particular case.
“But obviously it is a very emotional case – that is number one; it’s also a case that draws public interest. Therefore, you cannot create empty promises about it.
“All I’m telling you is that there is a strategy and it’s [being] dealt with in terms of a structured process.”
Sitole and Cele were part of the police delegation at the PSL’s partnership announcement with SAPS, as they look to curb criminal activity as well as promote safety and security at domestic football matches.
