Nhlanhla “Lux” Dlamini has urged Ethiopian and Pakistani nationals living and operating businesses in Soweto not to allow themselves to be intimidated by South Africans, saying those who are in the country for legitimate reasons should be able to live and work without fear.
Dlamini’s remarks come amid ongoing tensions between some South African communities and foreign nationals, particularly in areas where concerns about immigration, unemployment, crime and competition among small businesses have contributed to strained relations.
Addressing Ethiopian and Pakistani nationals in Soweto, Dlamini encouraged them to remain confident and stand their ground when confronted. He stressed that foreign nationals who are conducting legitimate businesses or pursuing lawful opportunities should not automatically be regarded as enemies by local residents.
He also urged them not to live in fear of South Africans and encouraged them to protect themselves if threatened or attacked. However, his remarks come at a sensitive time, as discussions about immigration and the treatment of foreign-owned businesses continue to generate strong reactions in different parts of the country.
The issue has highlighted the challenges facing communities attempting to balance concerns about immigration enforcement and local economic conditions with the rights and safety of people from other countries.
