Malema proposes R4 500 payment for pensioners

Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema has proposed increasing the monthly social grant for pensioners to R4,500, arguing that older South Africans play an important role in supporting their families and communities.

Malema made the proposal while addressing supporters at the launch of the EFF’s provincial manifesto in Emalahleni, Mpumalanga. The event was attended by scores of party supporters as the EFF outlined some of its priorities and policy proposals.

According to Malema, many pensioners are more than recipients of social assistance. He said older people often contribute significantly to the financial wellbeing of their families, particularly in households where younger members are unemployed or have limited incomes.

The proposed R4,500 monthly payment would represent a substantial increase from the current value of South Africa’s older person’s grant. Such an increase would have significant implications for the country’s social protection system and would require additional funding from the national budget if implemented.

The proposal comes amid continued political debate over the cost of living, unemployment, poverty and the role of social grants in supporting vulnerable households. Social grants provide an important source of income for millions of South Africans, with many households relying on them to help cover basic expenses such as food, transport and household costs.

Malema has argued that pensioners should receive greater financial support because of the responsibilities they often carry within extended families. In many households, older people use part of their grants to support children, grandchildren and other relatives who may not have stable employment.

The proposal is likely to form part of the wider political debate as parties present their policies and priorities to voters. Increasing social grants can provide additional income to vulnerable households, but any major increase would also require consideration of how it would be financed and what impact it would have on government expenditure.

The EFF’s manifesto launch in Emalahleni provided the party with an opportunity to present its position on a range of issues affecting residents in Mpumalanga. The proposed pensioner grant is one of the measures the party has put forward as part of its broader political programme.

Whether the R4,500 proposal could be implemented would ultimately depend on the party’s ability to secure the necessary political support and the availability of funding within the national budget.

For pensioners and families dependent on social assistance, the proposal could potentially provide meaningful additional financial support if it were adopted. However, it remains an EFF policy proposal rather than an existing government benefit, and there has been no indication in the information provided that the proposed amount has been approved by the government.

The announcement therefore adds another element to the ongoing discussion about social protection and economic policy in South Africa, particularly the question of how government can provide adequate support to older citizens while managing public finances.
