After nearly three months of uncertainty, anguish and an extensive search, 21-year-old North-West University Vaal student Naledi Zwane has been found in Pretoria and reunited with her family.
Zwane disappeared on 9 June 2026 while she was reportedly travelling to the Meyerton Licensing Department. Her sudden disappearance prompted a widespread search involving her family, members of the South African Police Service and concerned members of the public.
For almost three months, her whereabouts remained unknown, leaving her family desperate for answers and increasingly concerned about her safety. Appeals for information were circulated as efforts to locate the young woman continued.
A breakthrough came when a member of the public reportedly recognised Zwane in Pretoria. The person then contacted Zwane’s parents and informed police, allowing authorities to respond to the information and begin arrangements to establish whether the woman was indeed the missing student.
On Thursday, 3 September, members of the Meyerton South African Police Service accompanied Zwane’s mother to Pretoria. The visit was intended to confirm the young woman’s identity and establish that she was the same person who had been reported missing in June.
Following the confirmation, Zwane was reunited with her family, bringing an emotional end to a search that had continued for several weeks.
The circumstances surrounding Zwane’s disappearance remain unclear. At this stage, there is no detailed public information explaining where she had been during the period she was missing, why she disappeared or what happened between the time she was last seen and her discovery in Pretoria.
Police investigations are expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the case and determine whether any criminal activity was involved. Authorities may also seek to establish how Zwane travelled to Pretoria and whether she was in contact with anyone during her absence.
For her family, however, the immediate priority is her wellbeing following her safe return. The discovery also highlights the important role played by members of the public in missing-person investigations, particularly when information about a person’s whereabouts can be quickly communicated to relatives and law enforcement.
Zwane’s case attracted attention because of her age and her status as a university student. Her safe return will likely provide some relief to those who participated in the search, although important questions about the nearly three-month disappearance remain unanswered.
