Woman Forced To Drink Her Own Dirty Water After Selling Contaminated Bottles In Soweto

Furious residents cornered a street vendor in Meadowlands Zone 4, Soweto, on Thursday afternoon, demanding justice after discovering she had been distributing filthy, counterfeit water under a trusted local brand name. The crowd, numbering close to forty people, blocked every exit from the informal trading stall before community patrol members arrived to take control of the volatile gathering. What unfolded next shocked even the most hardened neighbourhood watch volunteers who have seen confrontations before.

Investigators confirmed the vendor, identified as Nomvula Dlamini, 34, of Dobsonville Extension 2, had allegedly been refilling branded plastic bottles with unfiltered tap water drawn from a contaminated municipal source and sealing them with a heat gun before selling each unit for R15. Dlamini allegedly moved over two hundred units weekly through informal taxi rank networks across Meadowlands and neighbouring Naledi. Health officials later established the liquid contained dangerously elevated coliform bacteria levels, rendering every bottle a potential outbreak vehicle.

Johannesburg Metro Police Department spokesperson Constable Thabo Nkosi told reporters that officers responded to a community disturbance call at approximately 14h30 and found Dlamini surrounded by dozens of agitated residents. “She was compelled by members of the public to consume the very product she had been hawking before our units secured the scene,” Nkosi stated. SAPS officers from Meadowlands South Station registered a case under the Consumer Protection Act and the National Health Act, with additional charges under the Foodstuffs, Cosmetics and Disinfectants Act being considered.

Dlamini had reportedly operated this scheme for approximately seven months without detection, rotating her supply points to avoid municipal health inspectors. Neighbours revealed she frequently targeted elderly grant recipients collecting SASSA payments nearby, knowing pensioners rarely questioned bottled merchandise. Several children from Phambili Primary School had reportedly purchased her water during lunch breaks throughout the preceding term.

A grade-four learner, wearing a torn maroon uniform with no shoes despite the bitter highveld cold, stood clutching an unsold bottle as evidence while her mother wept silently beside the confiscated stock. The child had bought three bottles using her own tuck-shop savings over the past month.

Dlamini faces a formal bail hearing at the Dobsonville Magistrate’s Court next Tuesday. Seventeen families have registered complaints, but how many more consumed her counterfeit supply without ever knowing what entered their bodies.
