A South African Police Service officer was allegedly caught taking a R2,000 bribe from a motorist during a roadblock.
According to reports, the motorist, who is said to be a foreign national, paid the money after being told to do so to avoid trouble and secure his release. However, the motorist’s boss later arrived at the scene and confronted the officer, demanding that the money be returned.
A video that has since circulated on social media allegedly shows the officer handing back what appears to be the money and apologising. When questioned about why she had demanded the bribe, she reportedly could not provide an explanation.
The incident has sparked outrage online, with many calling for disciplinary action against the officer. SAPS has not yet issued an official statement regarding the matter.
