A rising internal conflict within the MK Party has brought to light new divisions among its top leaders. Some members are now calling for Secretary-General Sibonelo Nomvalo to step down amid ongoing disagreements with Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, the daughter of former President Jacob Zuma. The tension has become more visible in recent weeks, especially after Nomvalo publicly stated that Zuma-Sambudla is just an ordinary member of the party and does not hold any official leadership role. This statement was part of the party’s effort to clarify its leadership structure, but it upset supporters who back Zuma-Sambudla.

Inside sources say that the relationship between Nomvalo and Zuma-Sambudla has worsened since he was appointed secretary-general earlier this year. Critics argue that Nomvalo has excluded Zuma-Sambudla from important discussions and key decisions, even though she played a significant role in helping the party gain support before the upcoming 2024 elections. Zuma-Sambudla has previously spoken out in support of some party members who faced suspension or dismissal, such as former spokesperson Nhlamulo Ndhlela. This has created a perception of competing power centers within the organization.

Recently, Nomvalo emphasized that the party’s official positions can only be communicated through authorized channels and official representatives. He also made it clear that all members, regardless of their connections or public profiles, must follow the party’s rules and code of conduct. His stance has angered some factions within the party who believe Zuma-Sambudla deserves more recognition because of her close ties to Jacob Zuma and her role in building the party’s support base.

Political analysts warn that these internal conflicts could threaten the unity of the MK Party as it prepares for important local government elections. Since its formation, the party has gone through several leadership changes, and Nomvalo’s current task is to restore stability and discipline. Although neither Jacob Zuma nor Zuma-Sambudla has publicly called for Nomvalo’s removal, the ongoing factional battles suggest that the fight for influence within the party is far from over. With elections approaching, how the leadership handles these divisions could be crucial for the party’s future success.
