Despite the fact that the winger was very much in the peak of his career only two years ago, the choice that Percy Tau made to continue his football career in Vietnam has practically placed an end to his experience with Bafana Bafana on the international stage. When it comes to South Africa’s preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Tau finds himself on the outside looking in.

The fact that Hugo Broos completely removed him from consideration for the national team when he moved to Thep Xanh Man Dinh was a difficult pill to swallow for a player who was at the center of Bafana’s ambitions for the 2023 African Cup of Nations. In South African football, it is a narrative that is all too familiar: excellent players leaving the national team despite the fact that they still have a lot to give.

It is possible that the instance of Steven Pienaar is the most prominent one. in the age of thirty, the former Everton midfielder announced his retirement from international service in 2012. He had previously served as the captain of South Africa’s national side and had represented South Africa in both the World Cups in 2002 and 2010. Pienaar’s choice was largely seen as an attempt to prolong his club career, and it was successful to some extent. He continued to play at the highest level in Europe until 2017, when Sunderland’s relegation from the Premier League essentially brought an end to that chapter.

A further example of someone who has left followers wondering what may have been is Thulani Serero. Despite the apparent skill he had, Serero was only able to earn 43 caps and never fully held a dominant position at the international level. His term was marred by a number of issues, including questions about his devotion and alleged tension with the administration of South African football. His last appearance was in a 1-0 victory over Sudan in an African Cup of Nations qualification in November 2019, when he was 29 years old.

He was still young enough to make a greater contribution. Dino Ndlovu completes a design that is already well-known. Ndlovu’s journeyman career spanning six nations, including China, Turkey, and Cyprus, made it impossible for him to be selected consistently, which limited what could have been a far more outstanding international record. Ndlovu is a technically competent striker with clever movement. This is a placeholder.
