Vincent Magwenya, the spokesman for the President of South Africa, has confirmed that President Cyril Ramaphosa was not aware of the fact that one of the delegates from Zimbabwe who was attending official engagements in South Africa is apparently sought by local police. The declaration comes at a time when the public is becoming more concerned as a result of rumours that a member of the Zimbabwean delegation has connections to a case that is being investigated in South Africa. There were concerns expressed over the manner in which such a person may be a member of a visiting delegation without the knowledge of the leadership of the nation that was hosting them.

In response to the issue, Magwenya emphasised that the President does not personally screen each and every individual who is included in different delegations from other countries. He stated that diplomatic trips are planned via established government channels, which include numerous ministries and security agencies that are responsible for doing the appropriate background checks upon the individuals who are going to be visiting.

Magwenya went on to say that it is the duty of the proper law enforcement and intelligence agencies to report any concerns that may arise over those who are entering the nation. If there had been previous knowledge of the individual’s legal status, then the proper actions would have been performed in accordance with the legislation of South Africa.

A reiteration of the Presidency’s commitment to maintaining the rule of law and ensuring that all foreign engagements conform to appropriate norms has been made. Officials have also informed that the situation is now getting attention from the competent authorities, who are anticipated to examine the circumstances surrounding the delegate’s presence in the nation. This information has been provided by officials.

Concerns have been raised over the efficiency of border control procedures and the cooperation between governments, in particular with regard to high-level diplomatic visits, as a result of the event. It has been suggested by analysts that the circumstance brings to light possible deficiencies that may need attention in order to forestall the recurrence of such events in the future.Although investigations are still ongoing, the Presidency has reassured the public that the government’s reaction would be guided by openness and accountability regardless of the circumstances.
