Human remains were discovered inside a crocodile in the Komati River during the search for a missing businessman near Komatipoort, Mpumalanga.
Authorities believe the crocodile may have attacked the man after his Ford Ranger was found trapped on a low-lying bridge in the river. The man went missing on 27 April during heavy rains that carried his vehicle into the river.
A joint rescue and investigation team, including police and park rangers, tracked down a suspect crocodile basking nearby. After permission was granted, the animal was euthanised from a helicopter. Partial human remains were found in its intestines, along with signs of prior attacks.
DNA tests will now be conducted to confirm whether the remains belong to the missing businessman. Pathologists are processing the evidence.

Officials have highlighted repeated warnings about the dangers of crossing low-water bridges during floods. The same area was the site of a soldier’s death in December 2025.
Major General Dr Zeph Mkhwanazi praised the teams for their bravery, noting they worked in an environment with hippos and crocodiles.
