The President of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa, has issued an appeal to foreign nationals who are currently residing in the country to respect the laws, customs, and constitutional principles of the country. During the ceremonies of Freedom Day that took place in the Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality in Bloemfontein, President Cyril Ramaphosa utilised the national stage to discuss immigration, South Africa’s international duties, and the significance of mutual respect between citizens and those who reside in the country.
According to the President, foreign people who are legally present in South Africa have a responsibility to follow the laws of the country and to respect its social customs and cultural traditions. His request was presented as an issue of reciprocity, and he stated that the same norms that South Africans would expect to be applied to those living within the borders of the country should also be applied to those living within the country.
Ramaphosa made the following statement: “Those who are here legally respect us as South Africans, respect our laws, respect our conventions, and respect our traditions, just as you would want us to respect the laws and traditions of your own country.”

Ramaphosa made an effort to differentiate between persons who are lawfully present in South Africa and others who are there illegally and who make a positive contribution to the country’s society.
