SIU Responds to Claims It Is Probing Cyan Boujee, Sithelo Shozi and MaWhoo After Lerutla’s Arrest

On April 2026, the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) addressed widespread claims circulating on social media that it had launched an investigation into influencers Cyan Boujee, Sithelo Shozi, and Mawhoo. These allegations suggested that the influencers were being probed for possible links to corruption involving Ekurhuleni City manager Kagiso Lerutla.

In response, the SIU firmly dismissed these reports as untrue and misleading. The unit clarified that its mandate does not involve investigating private individuals such as influencers or celebrities. Instead, its primary focus is on examining procurement processes and financial management within government departments and state institutions.

The SIU emphasised that its role is to identify irregularities, maladministration, or corruption tied to public funds, rather than targeting individuals based on public speculation or online rumors. Furthermore, the SIU explained how its investigations are initiated. It stated that cases typically begin with information received through formal allegations or tip-offs from whistleblowers or the public.

These reports are carefully assessed to determine whether there is sufficient basis to proceed. If the matter meets the necessary criteria, the SIU then seeks official authorization from the President before launching a full investigation. In light of the circulating misinformation, the SIU encouraged members of the public to act responsibly and avoid spreading unverified claims.

It also urged individuals who suspect wrongdoing to make use of official reporting channels, such as its hotline or email platform, to submit credible information that can be properly assessed. Reactions online were mixed, with some users expressing concern that the spread of false allegations could expose people to defamation lawsuits.

Others called for increased scrutiny of influencers’ lifestyles, arguing that transparency and accountability should extend beyond public officials. The situation highlighted the growing tension between social media speculation and formal investigative processes, as well as the importance of verifying information before sharing it widely.
