During an anti-foreigner march in Durban on Wednesday, outspoken social commentator Ngizwe Mchunu leveled explosive allegations against EFF leader Julius Malema, accusing him of involvement in fraud within the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality and declaring him unwelcome in KwaZulu-Natal .

Allegations of Fraud in Ekurhuleni

Mchunu claimed that former EFF deputy president Floyd Shivambu informed him that Malema and his associates are involved in looting funds within the Ekurhuleni municipality . He alleged that Shivambu stated more than R10 million is being fraudulently claimed every month within the municipality’s security department .

Ngizwe Mchunu says Julius Malema is no longer welcome in KZN 😭that guy is getting his Karma .

You can’t call on illegal foreigners on our Country and not experience Repercussions.

No evidence has been presented to support these claims, and Shivambu has not publicly commented on the allegations. Shivambu left the EFF in 2024 to join Jacob Zuma’s MK Party .

Malema ‘Not Welcome’ in KZN

Mchunu also declared that Malema is no longer welcome in KwaZulu-Natal, accusing him of insulting KZN Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi . He added that this was not the first time Malema had made derogatory remarks about leaders from the province, claiming he had previously insulted both former president Jacob Zuma and the late Mangosuthu Buthelezi .

Political Reactions

The EFF in KwaZulu-Natal condemned Mchunu’s remarks as tribalist . Reactions to the outburst have divided along political lines, reflecting ongoing tensions over immigration, police investigations, and provincial rivalries .

Context of Tensions

Mchunu has been a vocal figure in anti-foreigner sentiments in KZN, organizing a march in Durban in 2024 under the banner “We are taking back our country,” which drew thousands of protesters . More recently, he has called for the closure of the border with Mozambique and for undocumented foreign nationals to be sent back to their home countries .

The allegations come amid heightened scrutiny of municipal governance in Ekurhuleni. The city has been at the centre of several investigations, including testimony before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry that revealed WhatsApp communications suggesting the EFF and ActionSA were involved in influencing a multi-million-rand security tender in Tshwane, with links to Ekurhuleni CFO Gareth Mnisi . The Hawks have also been investigating a security tender fraud case at the Ekurhuleni Metro .
