South African Police Service’s Operation Buyisa team conducted a firearms compliance inspection at Calvin and Family Security Services on Thursday, following a court dismissal of CEO Calvin Mathibeli’s bid to block it. They found discrepancies, including 42 missing firearms from the expected 857, pencil entries in registers instead of permanent ink, and poor documentation of weapon movements.

The audit will span sites in Durban North, Newcastle, and the Western Cape to verify serial numbers, licenses, and storage, with potential confiscations or charges for non-compliance amid rising gun violence.

UPDATE | Police say they’ve already picked up discrepancies during the inspection.

The Calvin and Family security company should have 857 firearms but, so far, only 815 are accounted for.

Some entries in the firearms register are also in pencil, which raises concerns.
