The head of the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), Andy Mothibi, says steps are being taken to ensure that all criminal referrals arising from investigations into the alleged R900-million fraud at Tembisa Hospital are processed without delay.

Speaking in an interview, Mothibi confirmed that he has called for all referrals from various investigative bodies to be attended to, signalling a renewed push to ensure accountability in one of the country’s most high-profile public sector corruption cases.

The alleged fraud, often referred to as the “Tembisa Hospital heist,” involves claims that hundreds of millions of rand were siphoned from the hospital through irregular procurement contracts and fraudulent payments.

Among those who have been mentioned in connection with the investigation is businessman Hangwani Morgan Maumela, who has been described by investigators as a key figure in the network of companies that allegedly benefited from irregular payments.

Mothibi said the NPA is committed to ensuring that all evidence gathered by investigators leads to proper legal processes, including potential prosecutions where sufficient evidence exists.

“All criminal referrals related to this matter must be attended to,” Mothibi said, adding that prosecutors and investigators are working to ensure that the case progresses through the justice system.

The investigation into procurement irregularities at Tembisa Hospital has attracted significant public attention over the past several years, particularly due to the large sums of money allegedly involved and the impact such corruption can have on public healthcare services.

Authorities have indicated that the investigation involves multiple agencies working together to uncover the full extent of the alleged fraud and identify those responsible.

Anti-corruption advocates have repeatedly called for swift action, arguing that delays in prosecuting corruption cases undermine public trust in the justice system.

Mothibi said the NPA remains focused on ensuring that all cases supported by evidence are pursued and that individuals implicated in wrongdoing are held accountable.

Further developments in the investigation are expected as prosecutors assess the criminal referrals and determine the next legal steps in the matter.
