Fikile Mbalula Plot To Disband ANC KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Task Team

The Secretary-General of the African National Congress, Fikile Mbalula, is reportedly spearheading a move to disband the party’s KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Task Team (PTT), a decision that could significantly reshape the ANC’s leadership structure in the province.

Highly placed sources within the ANC say discussions are at an advanced stage regarding the future of the KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) task team, which was appointed to stabilise the party following internal divisions and organisational challenges. The task team has been overseeing party activities in the province pending the convening of a fully-fledged provincial conference to elect new leadership.

Mbalula’s reported push to dissolve the PTT is understood to be part of broader efforts to reconfigure and strengthen the ANC’s structures ahead of upcoming political engagements. Insiders indicate that concerns have been raised about the task team’s effectiveness in uniting party factions and preparing the ground for a credible and inclusive provincial conference.

KwaZulu-Natal remains a critical province for the ANC, both in terms of membership and electoral performance. However, it has also been plagued by persistent factional battles that have undermined cohesion and organisational stability. The establishment of the task team was initially viewed as a temporary intervention to restore order and rebuild trust among members.

Party insiders suggest that disbanding the current structure could pave the way for the appointment of a new interim leadership collective or the fast-tracking of a provincial conference. Some within the province have reportedly expressed mixed reactions, with supporters of the task team arguing that it should be given more time to complete its mandate.

The ANC’s national leadership has not yet issued an official statement confirming the decision. However, political analysts say any move to dissolve the KZN task team will need to be handled delicately to avoid deepening divisions in a province that has historically played a decisive role in the party’s internal dynamics.

Mbalula has previously emphasised the importance of unity, discipline and organisational renewal within the ANC. Observers believe that the outcome of the discussions around the KwaZulu-Natal structure could have broader implications for the party’s strategy in other provinces facing similar challenges.

As consultations continue, party members in KwaZulu-Natal await clarity on the future of their provincial leadership and the direction the ANC intends to take in one of its most influential strongholds.
