Anele Mdoda Faces Backlash Over Call for Death Penalty in Bolt Driver Murder Case

Radio personality Anele Mdoda has sparked intense debate after calling for the execution of four suspects accused of murdering Nigerian Bolt driver Isaac Satlat, with critics accusing her of “selective outrage” over crimes involving foreign nationals .

Satlat, a 22-year-old Nigerian automotive engineering student, was strangled to death by passengers on Wednesday, 11 February, in Pretoria West after responding to a ride request . The harrowing attack was captured on the vehicle’s dashcam, showing a male and female passenger assaulting him until he became unresponsive . His body was later found dumped in bushes in Atteridgeville .

Mdoda’s Controversial Remarks

On her X account, the 947 Breakfast Show presenter reacted to the murder with a strong statement: “No, they deserve to die. I’m sorry, but they don’t belong on earth. Why kill him? Why? No, they must be executed” .

While many agreed that Satlat’s death was senseless, Mdoda’s comments drew immediate criticism from users who accused her of being selective about which crimes she speaks out on .

Accusations of “Selective Outrage”

Critics pointed to two main arguments against Mdoda’s stance. Some referenced that Satlat was operating under another driver’s registered profile at the time of his death, which Bolt confirmed constitutes prohibited “profile sharing” . The company stated that where impersonation occurs, the individual is considered to be operating unlawfully and outside the scope of the platform’s protections .

Others argued that South African celebrities are more vocal when foreigners are victims but remain silent when South Africans are targeted by foreign nationals .

@PhilaJMadondo wrote: “So you’re going to overlook that he was fraudulently and illegally using another Bolt driver’s profile? You’re the very same Anele who streamed live while you were being ill-treated by an e-hailing driver in Cape Town who was most probably using a false e-hailing driver profile!!!” .

@earth2sizwe commented: “The selective outrage by SA celebrities when foreigners are victims of crimes is astonishing. We never see the same energy when South Africans are victims of crimes committed by foreigners” .

So you're going to overlook that he was fraudulently & illegaly using another Bolt driver's profile? You're the very samw Anele who streamed live while you were being ill-treated by an e-hailing driver in Cape Town who was most probably using a false e-hailing driver profile!!!

Satlat’s Background and Legal Developments

Satlat was due to graduate in March 2026 and had plans to further his studies in Canada . His family has stated that the motive appeared to be robbery and not xenophobia .

Three suspects—Dikeledi Mphela, 24; Goitsione Machidi, 25; and McClaren Mushwana, 30—appeared in the Pretoria Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 17 February, facing charges of murder and hijacking . A fourth suspect handed himself over to police in Atteridgeville and appeared in court on Tuesday . All four are South African and face charges of premeditated murder and robbery with aggravating circumstances .

Mdoda’s Previous E-Hailing Ordeal

The backlash comes a year after Mdoda herself shared footage of a horrifying Uber trip in Cape Town, where a driver threatened to rape her after she selected the “don’t talk to me” option . She had to fake being on Instagram Live to get home safely . Uber vowed to investigate and take action against the driver at the time .

The e-hailing community continues to raise concerns about driver safety, with E-hailing Partners Council chair Henry Mathebula stating that Satlat’s murder was not an isolated incident, joining “hundreds of e-hailing drivers murdered while on duty in recent years” .

Did you say the same when two young SA girls were killed by a Nigerian? Did you say the same when Zimbabweans killed innocent SAns in Soshanguve? Did you say the same when a Zimbabwean woman killed a young child e Protea Glen wamfaka kwi suitcase?
