usimuzi Cat Matlala appeared before the South Gauteng High Court on Thursday as his legal team launched a renewed bid for bail and sought clarity on his transfer from a super-maximum correctional facility in KwaZulu-Natal.

Matlala, described by prosecutors as an alleged criminal kingpin, faces multiple counts of attempted murder and related charges stemming from alleged botched hit attempts. He has previously been denied bail and remains in custody pending trial.

In court, the defence signalled it would present fresh grounds to support the new application. Central to its argument are concerns about limited access to legal counsel due to Matlala’s incarceration outside Gauteng. His lawyers contend that the distance has complicated trial preparation and consultation, potentially affecting his right to a fair trial.

The State is expected to oppose the application, maintaining that earlier bail rulings remain justified given the seriousness of the charges and the alleged risk of interference with witnesses.

Proceedings also touched on the readiness of Matlala’s co-accused, with the court seeking updates on whether all parties are prepared to proceed to trial within a reasonable timeframe.

The matter was adjourned to allow further submissions, with the court indicating it would consider both the bail application and the logistical issues surrounding Matlala’s detention before issuing a ruling.
