Limpopo ANC Faces Tensions Ahead of Provincial Conference

Despite the accusations, an ANC leader said the party's representation has nothing to do with tribes.

Concerns are growing within the ANC in Limpopo over possible divisions ahead of the party’s provincial elective conference in March.

Five ANC regions have backed a single list of candidates for the top five leadership positions. The proposed list includes Premier Phophi Ramathuba as chairperson, Polokwane Mayor Makoro John Mpe as deputy chair, current Provincial Secretary Vhamusanda Reuben Madadzhe for the same role, Mopani Mayor Pule ‘Frelimo’ Shayi as deputy secretary, and Fetakgomo Tubatse Mayor Eddie Maila as treasurer.

The exclusion of Deputy Provincial Secretary Rodgers Basikopo Makamu has sparked criticism, with some members alleging it sidelines Tsonga-speaking communities. Makamu, who is from Giyani, has served two terms in his current position.

A party member from Bolobedu described Makamu as deeply experienced in ANC politics, while an ANC leader in Giyani, who spoke anonymously, questioned the lack of Tsonga representation in the proposed top five.

However, a regional executive committee member from the Norman Mashabane region dismissed claims of tribal politics, stating leadership is chosen based on qualities and skills, not ethnicity.

Peter Ngobeni, speaking for the five supporting regions, said the list aims to promote unity and renewal within the party ahead of local government elections.
