The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has updated its policy to extend social grant eligibility to certain categories of foreign nationals, specifically asylum seekers and special permit holders.
This move has sparked significant debate on social media, with some South African taxpayers expressing concern over the strain on the social grant system. Critics argue that many citizens already face delays and challenges in accessing grants, and expanding eligibility could exacerbate these issues.
SASSA has not yet released detailed guidelines on the implementation or the specific permits covered. The agency maintains that the policy aligns with humanitarian principles and South Africa’s international obligations.
The conversation highlights ongoing tensions around social support, migration, and resource allocation in the country.
