An off-duty police officer’s quick thinking and courage prevented what could have been a violent hijacking outside a shopping center in Humansdorp on Sunday afternoon, authorities have confirmed.

The incident occurred at approximately 3:15 PM when the officer, who has not been publicly identified for security reasons, was leaving a retail store in the town’s main shopping district. According to witness accounts, three armed suspects approached the officer as he walked toward his personal vehicle in the parking area.

The suspects, brandishing what appeared to be firearms, demanded the officer’s car keys and personal belongings. However, the veteran police officer immediately identified himself and engaged the would-be hijackers in a confrontation that lasted several minutes.

“The officer showed exceptional bravery and professionalism,” said Provincial Police Spokesperson Captain Malcolm Pojie. “Despite being outnumbered and off-duty, he maintained his composure and successfully defended himself against the attackers.”

During the altercation, the officer managed to draw his service weapon and fired warning shots, causing the suspects to flee the scene on foot. No injuries were reported during the incident, and the officer pursued the suspects briefly before they escaped into a nearby residential area.

Local law enforcement responded swiftly to the scene, establishing a perimeter and launching a manhunt for the three suspects. Police have opened a case of attempted hijacking and are currently reviewing security camera footage from the shopping center to assist with identification.

Community members have praised the officer’s actions, with many expressing relief that the situation did not escalate into something more serious. Humansdorp has experienced a concerning rise in vehicle-related crimes over the past year, making this successful intervention particularly significant for local residents.

“This incident demonstrates the dedication of our law enforcement officers, even when they’re off the clock,” said Ward Councillor Thembinkosi Matiwane. “We commend this officer for his bravery and commitment to protecting our community.”

Police are urging anyone with information about the suspects or the incident to contact the Humansdorp Police Station or Crime Stop at 08600 10111. All information will be treated confidentially.

Authorities have also reminded residents to remain vigilant in parking areas and to report any suspicious activity immediately to local law enforcement.
