Gwede Mantashe, South Africa’s minister of mineral and petroleum resources, has warned that the country’s job crisis will persist until its citizens actively seek out and pursue work alternatives.

The following quote is from Mantashe’s most recent interview: “People must look for work and not wait for the government to give them jobs.” To ensure their livelihoods, he said, residents should pursue possibilities, hone their abilities, and investigate fields like mining, energy, and small company ownership.

The need of personal initiative was also emphasised by Mantashe. “It is not enough to hope for opportunities; you must create them,” he added, emphasising that people should not sit on their hands and passively wait for others to help them.

His words arrive at a time when economic uncertainty and youth unemployment are on the rise in South Africa. While government initiatives do their best to facilitate the creation of jobs, Mantashe’s remark emphasises that individuals must also take initiative in this matter.

Many people have different opinions about the comments. While many applauded his call for individual initiative and self-sufficiency, others noted that everyday people still face enormous structural barriers and a lack of employment prospects.

Mantashe reaffirmed the notion that combating unemployment necessitates the combined efforts of the government and the people of South Africa by calling on them to take initiative. His admonition was crystal clear: in this economy, people need to take charge and make their own opportunities if they want to survive and thrive
