The Free State Music Association (FSMA) has demanded an urgent explanation from Lesedi FM and the SABC over the station’s 2025 Song of the Year selection, alleging a lack of transparency has damaged trust in the platform.

The winning song, “Ya Itshepelang Modimo” by Oufadafada, was announced to usher in the new year. However, the FSMA stated that the selection process lacks clear governance, verification, and judging criteria, undermining credibility and risking artists’ reputations and livelihoods.

In a strong statement, the association called on Lesedi FM station manager Mamontha Motaung and SABC leadership to provide a public explanation. The FSMA warned that the controversy has broader implications for the integrity of cultural institutions that shape South Africa’s music industry.

The association issued a 24-hour ultimatum for a response and requested an urgent meeting with station and SABC officials.

In response, SABC Head of Communication Mmoni Ngubane denied that Lesedi FM runs a “Song of the Year” campaign with listener voting. Ngubane stated the song played into the new year is selected by the station and not voted on by the public or any stakeholder.
