A long-acting HIV prevention injection will become available in KwaZulu-Natal healthcare facilities from February.
Known as Lenacapavir colloquially called uLena the injection is administered only twice a year and offers an alternative to daily pills. KZN Health MEC Nomagugu Simelane announced the rollout during an event in Madadeni, calling it a significant breakthrough in HIV prevention.
Simelane emphasized that the injection provides sustained protection, especially for people who find it difficult to adhere to daily medication. However, she cautioned that it does not protect against other sexually transmitted infections or prevent pregnancy, urging continued condom use and responsible behavior.
The rollout marks a major expansion of HIV prevention options in a province heavily affected by the epidemic.
