The chairperson of the Alexandra Taxi Association (ATA), Vusi Mayaba, was shot and killed in a parking lot in Woodmead on Wednesday night.

The association’s secretary, Sibusiso Zwane, confirmed the shooting occurred near The Baron Restaurant around 10 p.m. Mayaba was reportedly traveling alone at the time, without his usual security detail.

This incident follows the fatal shooting of two other ATA members in a drive-by shooting in Carlswald, Midrand, just two days earlier. It also comes a month after the chairperson of a rival taxi association was ambushed and killed in Marlboro.

Johannesburg Transport MMC Kenny Kunene expressed deep concern over the multiple taxi-related murders in the city recently, noting this is the third killing of a taxi boss in Johannesburg in recent months.

Mayaba was involved in efforts to reduce violence and establish new operating routes within the Alexandra taxi industry. Police are investigating the murder.
