The uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party has issued serious allegations that one of its Members of Parliament, Vusi Shongwe, was abducted and forced to withdraw money from his personal bank account in what the party describes as a deliberate and politically charged attack.

According to party officials, the incident occurred earlier this week when Shongwe was confronted by unidentified individuals who reportedly intercepted him while he was travelling. The assailants are said to have confiscated his mobile devices, restricting his communication, before compelling him to conduct several ATM withdrawals under duress. The MK Party has suggested that the operation appeared coordinated and intentionally directed at Shongwe due to his political role.

In a strongly worded statement, an MK Party spokesperson condemned the incident and stressed that the safety of elected representatives must be upheld. The party urged law enforcement agencies to prioritise the case and ensure that those behind the abduction are apprehended swiftly.

Local police have confirmed that a case related to the alleged abduction was opened, but authorities have withheld further details, citing the sensitivity of the ongoing investigation. Sources familiar with the situation noted that Shongwe did not suffer physical harm, though he is believed to be traumatised by the ordeal and is currently receiving support.

The allegations have prompted widespread concern within KwaZulu-Natal’s political landscape, where fears of escalating intimidation tactics are gaining traction. Analysts warn that such incidents, if politically motivated, could deepen tensions ahead of critical policy debates and regional political developments.

Public reaction has been immediate, with social media users expressing shock and calling for accountability and enhanced protection for public officials.

Shongwe, known for his community-focused activism and vocal presence in Parliament, is expected to make a formal public statement later this week. The MK Party has reiterated its commitment to safeguarding its representatives and assisting investigators as the case continues to unfold. Authorities have urged anyone with information to come forward as the inquiry progresses.
