Tensions have erupted within the ANC Youth League (ANCYL) following a dramatic internal clash that saw Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula instructing a senior Youth League official to issue a public apology over the suspension of ANCYL President Collen Malatji. The unfolding dispute has thrown the league into turmoil, exposing deep divisions and raising questions about leadership stability.

The controversy began when an ANCYL provincial structure moved to suspend Malatji over what they described as “serious organisational misconduct.” However, the decision quickly sparked outrage, with national leadership insisting that proper procedures were not followed. Mbalula, acting in his capacity as the ANC’s SG, intervened and declared the suspension invalid.

In an unexpected twist, Mbalula reportedly demanded that the Youth League secretary responsible for issuing the suspension letter apologise for causing organisational embarrassment and undermining established protocols. Sources say the official was warned that parallel processes and rogue decisions would not be tolerated.

“The ANC operates on rules, not personal emotions,” Mbalula was quoted as saying during the tense exchange. “Anyone acting outside of due process destabilises the organisation and must take accountability.”

The apology has since been issued, but the incident has deepened simmering factional tensions within the league. Analysts note that the ANCYL, traditionally a breeding ground for future leaders, has struggled to maintain unity amid competing ideological interests and power contests.

Youth League members loyal to Malatji have welcomed Mbalula’s intervention, describing it as a step toward restoring order. Others argue that the clash reflects broader instability within the ANC itself.

As the dust settles, the ANCYL faces renewed pressure to strengthen its internal governance and rebuild trust among its members.
