A fully functional toilet made from 18-carat gold has sold for approximately R200 million at auction. The artwork, titled ‘America’ by artist Maurizio Cattelan, weighs over 100 kilograms.
The buyer, Ripley’s Believe It or Not!, announced the piece will become part of its museum collection rather than being used as a functioning toilet. This is the first casting of the artwork, after another version was stolen from Britain’s Blenheim Palace in 2019.
