Bushiri says Floyd Shivambu’s mother is a leader in his South African church

The fugitive self-proclaimed prophet Shepherd Bushiri has once again injected himself into the South African news cycle with a sensational claim made during a recent media interview. In video clips widely shared across social media, Bushiri asserted that the mother of prominent political figure Floyd Shivambu serves as one of the leaders within his church organisation in South Africa. This claim, which came as a surprise to many members of the public, has ignited a fresh wave of controversy surrounding the political leader and the controversial prophet.

According to Bushiri’s statement, Mr Shivambu’s mother occupies a significant leadership position within the South African branch of his church, known as the Enlightened Christian Gathering (ECG). While the exact nature of her role was not explicitly detailed, the title suggests a position of considerable authority and trust within the movement’s hierarchy. This claim positions a close family member of a national political leader as having a formal association with the prophet, who currently resides outside the country while facing extradition proceedings from South African authorities over fraud and money laundering charges.

The revelation has added significant complexity to the existing public discourse regarding the alleged relationship between high-profile politicians and the controversial prophet. Prior to this claim, Mr Shivambu had already faced significant public scrutiny for having visited Bushiri’s church in a neighbouring country. That visit, which was widely debated at the time, fuelled extensive speculation about the nature of their association. This new assertion, linking a close family member directly to a position of church leadership, further intensifies public interest in the nature and extent of this high-profile political and religious connection.

This announcement is seen as highly significant, particularly given that Floyd Shivambu is currently the leader of his own political party, the Afrika Mayibuye Movement (AMM). The situation connects a family member of a political figure known for his radical and revolutionary political stance to a charismatic religious figure whose movement operates globally. This alleged relationship may prompt further questions regarding the separation of personal faith, familial ties, and public political duty within the AMM. The incident underscores the deeply intertwined nature of religion and politics in the country, often leading to intense public scrutiny when these affiliations become unexpectedly transparent.
