HOT: EFF Leader Julius Malema Clashes with PA MP Ashley Sauls in Heated Parliamentary Exchange

Tensions erupted in Parliament today as Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema clashed with Patriotic Alliance (PA) Member of Parliament Ashley Sauls during a fiery debate session. The confrontation, which quickly became the highlight of the sitting, underscored the deepening divisions between the two parties over issues of governance, service delivery, and immigration policy.

The altercation reportedly began when Malema accused the Patriotic Alliance of “selling out black South Africans” by aligning themselves with right-wing political interests. In response, Sauls fired back, accusing Malema and the EFF of “grandstanding and using racial politics to stay relevant.” Their verbal exchange grew increasingly heated, prompting the Speaker to intervene several times to restore order. Witnesses described the atmosphere in the chamber as “charged and chaotic”, with MPs from both sides shouting and trading accusations. Despite repeated warnings from the presiding officer, neither Malema nor Sauls backed down. The confrontation ended only after both were asked to withdraw inflammatory remarks.

Political analysts say the clash reflects growing tensions between the EFF and the PA, especially as both parties seek to expand their influence in municipalities ahead of the next election. The Patriotic Alliance has recently positioned itself as a defender of local governance and stricter immigration enforcement, while the EFF continues to push its radical economic transformation agenda. Following the incident, both parties issued statements defending their positions. The EFF accused the PA of betraying the interests of marginalized communities, while the PA described Malema’s comments as “reckless and desperate.” The confrontation highlights the increasingly polarized state of South African politics—where fiery exchanges like this one have become a common feature of the national discourse.
