President Cyril Ramaphosa has announced a cabinet reshuffle drawing on his constitutional authority to appoint and remove ministers as necessary.

“In accordance with section 91(3)(b) of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, I have appointed Willem Abraham Stephanus Aucamp as Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment. Consequently, I have removed Dion George from the portfolio in accordance with section 91(2) of the Constitution,” Ramaphosa stated in an official release.

In another move, he declared: “I have appointed Alexandra Lilian Amelia Abrahams as Deputy Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition, in accordance with section 93(1)(a) of the Constitution.” He expressed confidence in the new appointees and extended his best wishes, saying, “I wish Mr Aucamp and Ms Abrahams well in their portfolios.”

The changes reflect the dynamic nature of governance in South Africa and the President’s prerogative to align the National Executive with evolving priorities and performance expectations. They also signal a renewed focus on environmental stewardship and industrial growth, areas where leadership is deemed critical.

Observers will now watch closely how Aucamp and Abrahams navigate their leadership roles amid national and global pressures. For Aucamp, the environment portfolio comes at a pivotal time as South Africa seeks to ramp up conservation and climate‑resilient strategies. Abrahams, meanwhile, steps into a deputy ministerial position amid ongoing calls to reinvigorate trade and industry.

These appointments follow discussions between Ramaphosa and opposition leaders over Cabinet placements, highlighting a broader shift in the Government of National Unity. With this reshuffle, the President reinforces his constitutional mandate and sets the tone for the next phase of governance.
