Zulu King Misuzulu kaZwelithini is facing significant criticism from some clans over his recent decisions regarding traditional land. The controversy involves land in Umzinyathi and Mtubatuba areas that the king has assigned to business associates, leading to strong reactions from local communities.
Members of the Mkhwanazi clan have protested the decisions, with some threatening to separate from the Zulu kingdom and others warning of potential road closures on the N2 highway. The situation has become tense enough that KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Lt-Gen Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi has called for calm and scheduled a meeting for November 16 to address the land dispute.
Meanwhile, the king celebrated his traditional marriage to Nomzamo Myeni on Friday in Jozini, though the event was marked by some controversy. Earlier in the week, conflicting statements had emerged about whether the wedding would proceed, with some royal family members reportedly not attending the ceremony.
The land issue and wedding controversies have created a challenging period for the monarchy, as authorities work to resolve the land disputes peacefully.
