Former Public Enterprises Minister Malusi Gigaba has appeared in court regarding alleged irregularities in Transnet’s procurement processes.

The specific charges are not yet public. In a statement, Gigaba said he would cooperate fully with the legal proceedings and maintains his innocence.

Gigaba’s tenure at the state-owned company has been under scrutiny. While he advocated for Black Economic Empowerment and industrial development, a judicial state capture inquiry later found that he encouraged Transnet to bypass national treasury regulations. The inquiry also found he approved board appointments that enabled corruption.

The court appearance is part of a larger investigation into alleged corruption at Transnet during his period of leadership.
