CJ Maya Raises Alarm Over Explosive R2.5-Million “Bail Deal” Allegation at Madlanga Inquiry

Chief Justice Mandisa Maya has voiced serious concern over startling testimony before the Madlanga Commission alleging that R2,5 million was earmarked to unlawfully secure bail for accused underworld figure Katiso “K T” Molefe.

The allegation was made by the witness referred to as “Witness A”, who told the inquiry that a senior judicial figure was linked to discussions about mobilising funds to influence Molefe’s bail outcome. The claim has sent shockwaves through the legal fraternity, prompting the Chief Justice to urgently seek clarification on the potential institutional implications.

According to the Office of the Chief Justice, Maya has already engaged Acting Judge President Aubrey Ledwaba, who was indirectly implicated through a suggestion that he may have been aware of – or associated with – the scheme. Ledwaba vehemently denies any misconduct and has indicated his intention to obtain legal counsel and present a formal response before the commission.

The Chief Justice described the allegation as “extremely grave” due to its possible impact on judicial integrity and public confidence in the courts, particularly at a time when judicial accountability is under heightened scrutiny. She emphasised that the judiciary must not only act with independence but must also be seen to act without fear, favour or improper influence.

While the commission has not yet determined the credibility of the testimony, the accusation raises questions about interference in high-profile criminal proceedings and the possible involvement of individuals positioned to manipulate judicial outcomes.

The Chief Justice urged the Madlanga Commission to pursue the matter with speed and fairness, noting that reputations, constitutional obligations, and systemic trust are at stake. She also affirmed the right of those implicated to respond fully under oath.

Ledwaba has welcomed the opportunity to appear before the commission, saying he intends to present his side of the story and defend the integrity of his record on the Bench.

The Madlanga Commission is expected to continue hearing witness evidence in the coming days, with legal and public interest intensifying around the Molefe matter and the far-reaching implications of any proven judicial interference.
