Billionaire Patrice Motsepe has sparked political discussion after highlighting Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi in a speech about leadership. His comments have led to speculation that he may see Lesufi as a potential successor to President Cyril Ramaphosa.

Speaking at a public event, Motsepe described the role of president as a “calling,” not a position that requires personal wealth. He then pointed to Lesufi as an example of someone with talent and commitment.

Motsepe, who is Ramaphosa’s brother-in-law and a influential figure, called the duty of a leader “sacrosanct,” suggesting it requires high moral responsibility.

This comes amid internal tensions within the ANC. The party’s secretary-general, Fikile Mbalula, recently had to apologize for claiming Motsepe had political ambitions of his own. Mbalula stated he was merely warning party members against public talk of who will succeed Ramaphosa.

The comments have been met with mixed reactions online. Some social media users criticized the focus on Lesufi, pointing to controversies during his tenure. Others saw it as a significant moment in the early, informal discussions about the ANC’s future leadership.
