Tensions within the MK Party have reached a boiling point as former Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane dropped a political bombshell, accusing the party’s Mpumalanga Secretary, Abednego Mkhatshwa, of slander and incitement.

According to insiders, Mkhwebane claims Mkhatshwa has been spreading false allegations aimed at damaging her reputation and undermining her influence within the party. The accusations, which surfaced during a tense internal meeting earlier this week, have sent shockwaves through MK Party ranks.

“This is not just a personal attack; it’s indicative of deeper divisions that are threatening the cohesion of the party,” said a senior MK Party insider who requested anonymity.

Observers suggest that the public spat underscores longstanding factionalism and power struggles at the top of the party, with different wings vying for control ahead of crucial upcoming municipal elections. Analysts warn that unless swiftly addressed, the fallout could weaken the MK Party’s standing among its supporters.

Both Mkhwebane and Mkhatshwa have yet to release formal statements, but sources indicate that legal action is under consideration. Party officials are reportedly holding emergency consultations to contain the situation and prevent further escalation.

Political analysts say this latest drama is emblematic of broader challenges facing emerging parties in South Africa, where leadership disputes often spill into the public domain, affecting credibility and voter confidence.

The MK Party’s response in the coming days will be closely watched, as members and the public alike await clarity on the future direction of the party amidst growing internal unrest.
