“The Poor Can’t Afford It Anymore” – Citizens Slam Ramaphosa’s Praise for Eskom’s Profit

President Cyril Ramaphosa has expressed his approval of Eskom’s financial advancements, describing them as a critical step in the process of rehabilitating the power utility and enhancing the nation’s electricity supply. He stated that the utility will now have the capacity to allocate additional funds towards the construction and maintenance of its power stations.

Ramaphosa clarified that Eskom is now better equipped to assist South Africa’s long-term energy objectives as a result of the hard work it has undertaken through the Generation Recovery Plan over the past few months. He disclosed that Eskom intends to allocate over R320 billion towards critical initiatives that will enhance infrastructure and enhance the reliability of the electricity supply. He believes that these endeavours will contribute to the expansion of industries and the creation of additional employment opportunities.

Additionally, he stated that the recent months have seen a decrease in the number of failures and load shedding as a result of the enhancements in power plant operations. Nevertheless, the president’s statements have not been well-received by a significant number of South Africans. The government’s celebration of Eskom’s profit is perceived as unjust by ordinary citizens, as numerous individuals are unable to afford electricity.

The reason Eskom is earning more money, according to certain social media users, is that electricity prices are continuing to rise. They contended that impoverished households are the most affected, as numerous households are currently experiencing financial hardships in order to pay their electricity expenses. According to others, the president would comprehend the severity of the situation if he were required to purchase electricity in the same manner as ordinary citizens.

The financial success of Eskom is perceived as meaningless by a significant number of South Africans, as they are paying a premium for fundamental services. They believe that the government is taking pride in the incorrect things, as citizens continue to experience hardship. However, there were also those who cautioned that the increasing disparity between the wealthy and the impoverished could result in an increase in public frustration and hostility.

In contrast, Eskom maintains that it is imperative to achieve financial stability in order to decrease its reliance on government subsidies. The power utility asserts that it must maintain its strength in order to continue enhancing its service delivery and generation capacity.

Nevertheless, a significant number of citizens continue to maintain the belief that the primary objective should be to ensure that electricity is affordable before celebrating profits. They assert that a genuine recovery for Eskom should also result in alleviation for the individuals who rely on it on a daily basis.
