Kaizer Chiefs and Bafana Bafana icon Lucas Radebe has made a triumphant return to England after being announced as the new club ambassador for Leeds United, the team where he spent more than a decade of his professional career. Leeds confirmed the appointment in an official statement, hailing Radebe as a “revered figure” and the ideal link between the club and its global fanbase. His role will see him represent the Whites internationally, with a particular focus on Africa, where his legacy continues to inspire a new generation of footballers.

For Radebe, affectionately nicknamed “The Chief”, the return to Elland Road is deeply emotional. “I’m truly honoured to be back at the club that gave me so much. Leeds is in my heart, and I’m excited to help build its legacy for the future,” he said. Radebe’s journey to Leeds began in 1994, when he signed from Kaizer Chiefs for a reported £250,000. Having played more than 110 matches for the Glamour Boys between 1989 and 1994, he went on to make over 250 appearances for Leeds, eventually captaining the side during its memorable UEFA Champions League run in the early 2000s. His leadership and commitment earned him cult-hero status in Yorkshire.

Internationally, Radebe was just as influential, winning 70 caps for Bafana Bafana and playing a key role in South Africa’s 1996 Africa Cup of Nations triumph. Beyond football, his professionalism and humility earned him admiration worldwide, with Nelson Mandela famously calling him “my hero.” Leeds United CEO Angus Kinnear praised the appointment, describing Radebe as “the perfect embodiment of Leeds values – resilience, pride, and unity.” This appointment not only strengthens Leeds’ international identity but also reaffirms Radebe’s enduring legacy as one of South Africa’s greatest football ambassadors.
