Advocate Terry Motau has clarified that his reason for stepping down as the chief evidence leader of the Madlanga Commission was due to concerns over its budget.
Motau stated that the R147 million allocated by the Department of Justice was insufficient for the scale of the commission’s task. He formally communicated his decision to step down on September 11.
The Madlanga Commission was established by President Cyril Ramaphosa to investigate allegations that the criminal justice system has been infiltrated by criminal syndicates working with politicians and senior police officials.
Motau expressed confidence that the commission can still succeed in its role, but emphasized that the process depends on what can be proven with evidence. He has been replaced by Advocate Matthew Chaskalson.
