The African National Congress (ANC) is in mourning following the death of veteran party member and former Cabinet Minister Nathi Mthethwa. The party’s Secretary-General, Fikile Mbalula, led tributes on Monday, describing Mthethwa as a dedicated servant of the people and a loyal cadre of the movement.

In a statement issued by the ANC, Mbalula expressed deep sadness at Mthethwa’s passing and extended condolences to his family, friends, and comrades across the political spectrum. He praised Mthethwa’s longstanding contribution to the liberation struggle and his years of service in various ministerial roles in post-apartheid South Africa.

“We have lost a comrade, a disciplined and committed leader who dedicated his life to the betterment of our country and the advancement of democratic ideals,” Mbalula said. “Comrade Nathi served with integrity and humility. He will be remembered for his tireless work, especially in the portfolios of Police and Arts and Culture.”

Mthethwa, a senior ANC member and former member of the ANC National Executive Committee (NEC), held several key government positions under both President Jacob Zuma and President Cyril Ramaphosa. His tenure included service as Minister of Safety and Security (later Police), as well as Minister of Arts and Culture.

Known for his alignment with party structures and loyalty to the ANC, Mthethwa was a prominent figure during some of the most challenging periods in South Africa’s democratic history, particularly during efforts to reform the police and promote cultural development.

His death has prompted tributes from across the political and cultural landscape. Colleagues described him as principled and disciplined, even amid the evolving complexities of national governance.

Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced in coordination with the Mthethwa family and the ANC’s national leadership. Mbalula confirmed that the party will offer all necessary support to the family during this difficult time.

“Our thoughts are with his loved ones. May his soul rest in peace,” Mbalula concluded.
