The Madlanga Commission of Inquiry enters its sixth day, scheduled to focus on the laws governing the South African Police Service (SAPS). The commission was established by President Cyril Ramaphosa to investigate allegations of criminality, political interference, and corruption within the criminal justice system.

Last week, the commission heard testimony from two senior police officials, National Commissioner General Fannie Masemola and KwaZulu-Natal Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi. Their statements linked suspended Police Minister Senzo Mchunu to alleged crimes.

The officials testified that Minister Mchunu unlawfully disbanded the KZN Political Killings Task Team (PKTT), a specialized unit that had successfully investigated murders, including cases at the University of Fort Hare and those targeting traditional leaders.

Furthermore, both commissioners connected Mchunu to alleged crime figure Vusumuzi “Cat” Matlala, who is accused of infiltrating law enforcement. According to testimony, the motive for disbanding the task team became apparent following Matlala’s arrest in May 2025.

The commission continues its work to establish the facts surrounding these serious allegations.
