Shivambu’s New ‘Mayibuye iAfrika’ Movement Sparks Political Storm

Controversial politician Floyd Shivambu is reportedly mobilizing to launch a new liberation movement called *Mayibuye iAfrika*, a move that has sent shockwaves through South Africa’s political scene. The initiative, first reported by *City Press*, aims to address what Shivambu calls “the unfinished business of liberation” – but is already facing scrutiny over its timing and motives.

The former EFF and MKP leader’s political reinvention comes after his 2025 expulsion from the MK Party following unproven coup allegations. While Shivambu frames the new movement as a grassroots consultation process, critics question whether this represents genuine political renewal or a personal redemption project.

Key concerns emerging:
– The shadow of past controversies, including unsubstantiated coup claims
– Potential fragmentation of the radical economic transformation vote
– Questions about funding sources for the proposed nationwide consultations

Supporters argue South Africa needs fresh alternatives. “The ANC has failed liberation, the EFF has lost its way, and MKP is compromised,” said one early backer. “We need authentic radical voices.”

Political analyst Lebo Mashego notes: “Shivambu brings organizational experience but also baggage. His ability to unite factions beyond his personal following will determine whether this gains traction or becomes another short-lived project.”

The movement’s name – invoking the historic *Mayibuye* liberation slogan – has already drawn both nostalgia and criticism for appropriating struggle symbolism. With South Africa facing economic crisis and election fatigue, the public’s appetite for another new party remains uncertain.

As consultation meetings reportedly begin in July, all eyes will be on whether Shivambu can transform from political firebrand to coalition-builder – or if this venture will deepen the volatility of South Africa’s opposition landscape.
