The Madlanga Commission of Inquiry will on its sixth day hear testimony about the laws that guide the South African Police Service (SAPS).

The commission was established by President Cyril Ramaphosa to investigate allegations of corruption, political interference, and criminal activity within the criminal justice system.

So far, the inquiry has heard from National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola and KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.

Both commissioners linked Police Minister Senzo Mchunu, currently on special leave, to alleged criminal cartel member Vusumuzi “Cat” Matlala, who is suspected of infiltrating law enforcement.

They further testified that Mchunu unlawfully disbanded the KwaZulu-Natal Political Killings Task Team (PKTT), despite its success in solving cases related to murders at the University of Fort Hare and attacks on traditional leaders in the Eastern Cape.

Telephone records have also linked Mchunu to Matlala. Masemola told the inquiry that the decision to shut down the PKTT made sense only after Matlala’s arrest in May 2025.
