Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) MP Thapelo Mogale raised concerns in the Portfolio Committee on Home Affairs about a foreign national with permanent residence status who is allegedly using international platforms to sow division within South Africa. Mogale questioned whether the individual holds a South African passport and emphasized the legal powers available under the South African Passport Act of 1996.

Mogale reminded the committee that the Passport Act permits the Minister of Home Affairs to withdraw a South African passport on specific grounds, including national security, public order, or foreign relations. He called for firm and decisive action against foreign nationals who threaten South Africa’s unity and stability.

His remarks highlight the urgency of establishing clear and strong legal provisions in the upcoming white paper on citizenship and immigration. Mogale stressed that the government must ensure these laws prevent individuals from undermining the country through divisive activities, both domestically and internationally.

The South African Passport Act of 1996 provides the minister with significant discretion to revoke passports if an individual’s actions are deemed harmful to the nation’s security or its diplomatic relations. This power is intended as a protective measure to safeguard national interests.

Mogale’s call for firm action reflects wider concerns about national cohesion amid increasing xenophobic tensions and challenges related to immigration policies and enforcement.

The EFF continues to push for strict immigration controls and citizenship laws that protect South African sovereignty and social stability. This issue remains highly sensitive as the country grapples with balancing openness with safeguarding its constitutional order.

The parliamentary debate and upcoming policy review on citizenship and immigration will be critical in defining South Africa’s approach to managing nationality, residency, and the rights and responsibilities of those within its borders.

Mogale’s intervention is part of a broader parliamentary and political effort to address concerns about national security risks posed by foreign nationals exploiting legal loopholes or acting against South African interests.
