The African National Congress (ANC) has officially held onto Ward 7 in the Kgotsong area of Nala, securing 54% of the vote, according to final results released on Wednesday. While the victory cements the party’s control in this maize belt township, the race revealed a dramatic surge from the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), who captured 47%, up from just 25% in the previous local election.

The results signal a striking shift in voter sentiment, with the EFF closing the gap on the ANC in a community long regarded as an ANC stronghold. Political analysts describe the outcome as a “wake-up call” for the ruling party, highlighting the growing appetite for change among younger and disenchanted voters.

Meanwhile, the Nala Community Forum, which previously held a modest influence in the area, suffered a catastrophic decline, dropping to 3% from 17% in the last election. Observers say this collapse reflects the Forum’s inability to maintain a local support base amid intensified competition from national parties.

Voter turnout also saw a notable rise, with 63% of registered voters casting ballots, up from 53% in the previous poll, signaling increased political engagement in the region.

ANC spokesperson reaffirmed the party’s commitment to serving the community, acknowledging the EFF’s improved performance as “a clear message that residents expect more responsive and accountable leadership.” The EFF, meanwhile, celebrated its strong showing as proof of growing support in the Free State’s heartland.

As Ward 7 results reverberate across Lejweleputswa, political parties are now recalibrating strategies ahead of upcoming local government contests, with both national and local dynamics likely to shape future battles in the province.
